It's a Great Day to Be A Colt!

Thursday, March 26, 2020

Dear Colt Families,

You’ve likely heard from our Superintendent, Mr. Scott Leaman, that the County and District have extended the closure of all WPUSD schools through Friday, May 1st. It is our hope to resume school on Monday, May 4th. Here is a copy of the email Mr. Leaman sent out this afternoon.

Our team is incredibly sad about this situation, and I imagine you and your children are, too. The health and safety of our students and our community has to be our number one priority, though. We also recognize that learning at home is HARD - for kids, for parents, and for our team. The emotional implications of this closure are real, and are also exceptionally difficult.

In the last week, our team has pushed out information via email and paper to get your kiddos through April 3rd. I know my team has been ‘retooling and refining’ their efforts to connect and engage with kids as they have learned what works (and what doesn’t). Our team will be carving out time in the next couple of weeks to figure out how to best support students between April 14th and May 1st. Each teacher is approaching this in his/her own way. It’s possible we’ll be making additional packets for your child - we’ll be in touch about the when and where of the pickup in the coming week or so. Please be patient - we are all figuring this out together.

If you have a need to borrow a chromebook, you must email me back directly making that request. We have a limited supply, and so these devices are really intended for those who have no option at home...by now you probably know if that is your situation! You must email me by Wednesday, April 1st at 2 pm to get on the list for distribution. This is a hard deadline, and it’s possible that the deadline will be even earlier if the demand is high.

A reminder that students and families should NOT be on campus during the closure. You may see more activity on campus as teachers come and go to get materials and support students virtually, but my team is not available to talk in person, and we are not retrieving items from the classroom for students, as much as we would like to. We are really trying to maintain a ‘clean’ environment at school.

If you need to ask a question, you are most likely to reach someone in the office from 10am-2pm Monday-Friday (916 434 5292). You can always reach out to me on my cell phone at 702 324 6884. We are pushing all of our communication from via school messenger (when it’s big), and also our social media pages and our app. The district is sharing information nightly with families, so please watch for those emails for up to date information. The district is also answering their phones from 10am-2pm Monday-Friday at 916 645 6350.

This decision was incredibly difficult for our school leadership to make, and we appreciate your help and cooperation during this difficult time. Please stay safe and healthy.

We love seeing your kids in our ‘virtual spirit day’ pictures...keep them coming via email to me/your teacher, text them to me or attach them to social media posts. They keep our team smiling and I know your kiddos love to see themselves and their friends online, too!

Best,
Jen Hladun
Principal

Dear Colt Families,

We hope this finds you and your family in good spirits and good health. As we continue farther into this new journey of school closure, please know we appreciate your compassion, flexibility and understanding as we all figure it out together.

Please click here for this week’s Colt Connection.

In it is information about this week’s food distribution plans and the various ways that you can stay connected with your teacher, the school, and our district. Plus there is a quick read that I hope gives you permission to take a deep breath and remember that our kids are going to be okay! Right now they are looking to the adults for their cues about how to respond in crisis and/or uncertainty...it takes a village and we’ve got this!!

Best,

Jen Hladun
